“Discover SCIENCE with Dr. Bear” Science Education Partnership Award
Dr. Bear’s Cubs Summer Science Experience – June 22-26, 2020

This summer, we invite children entering grades 3 through 5 to apply to attend Dr. Bear’s Cubs Summer Science Experience, a weeklong camp experience with the theme “Inside Out & Outside In” held at Children’s National Hospital in conjunction with District of Columbia Public Libraries.

Students attending this free camp will have the unique opportunity to meet and interact with physicians, nurses, scientists and other health care providers while exploring the inner workings of the body, the nuances of human behavior, and topics such as anatomy, engineering, environmental science and neuroscience. Daily activities include science experiments (possibly including a brain dissection), arts and crafts, demonstrations from field experts and insider tours of different hospital departments.

Using the scientific knowledge of hospital staff augmented by new research skills at the library, students will work on a project showcasing their new understanding of the human body. They will share a presentation with parents, families and staff on the last day of camp.

Dr. Bear’s Cubs Summer Science Experience will accept between 20-25 students entering grades 3-5 who have a strong teacher/school staff recommendation and creative personal submission.

Monday, June 22 through Friday, June 26, 2020; drop-off at Children’s will be at 8:45am and pick-up will be at 4pm; parents and caregivers are solely responsible for transportation to and from Children’s (111 Michigan Ave. NW) at these times. Free breakfast and lunch will be served to campers.

The nomination packet can be filled out online here or found below and must be completed and returned no later than April 30, 2020 (deadline extended). Detailed instructions can be found in the application.

If you have any questions, please contact Julia Miller at 202-476-7031 or via email at We will respond to your application with an admission decision within 2-4 weeks of receipt. Dr. Bear Cubs Summer Science Experience is offered through Discover Science with Dr. Bear (“SCIENCE”) at Children’s National Hospital (CNH). CNH was awarded a five year Science Education Partnership Award from the National Institutes of Health to form a partnership with the DC Public Library System (DCPL) to offer hands-on STEM and arts programs focused on health issues of concern to District of Columbia families, including asthma, obesity, and mental health. We have brought “SCIENCE” programming to seven DCPL branches with afterschool and weekend activities and are now expanding to summer camp programming.
